Content vs. Backlinks in 2026: What Matters More for SEO? Share this article: If you have been doing SEO for any length of time, you have probably heard two very different arguments: “Content is king.” and “Backlinks are the most important ranking factor.” Both statements oversimplify SEO. In 2026, the more useful question is not whether content or backlinks are more important. It is what each one contributes to SEO, when you need them, and how they work together. Google says its ranking systems use many signals and systems to determine which pages are relevant and useful. Its documentation specifically describes both systems that understand content and link analysis systems, including PageRank. So, if you are building an SEO strategy today, I would not choose between content and backlinks as if they were competing tactics. I would build useful content first, then build relevant authority around it. Content vs. Backlinks: The Basic Difference At the simplest level, content and backlinks perform different jobs. Content helps search engines understand what your page is about and helps users get the information or solution they are looking for. Backlinks can help search engines discover pages and understand relationships and relevance between pages across the web. Google specifically documents links as a signal used for relevance and crawling, and PageRank remains part of its core ranking systems. Here is the simplest comparison: SEO factorGood contentBacklinksPrimary purposeSatisfies the searcher's needConnects your site with other sitesHelps establishRelevance, usefulness, expertiseExternal authority and relevance signalsCreated onYour websiteOther websites, primarilyDirectly improves user experienceYesUsually indirectlyCan help discoveryYesYesCan demonstrate expertiseYesIndirectlyCan generate leadsYesSometimes through referral trafficCan attract more linksYesN/ACan work without the otherSometimesLess effectively when pointing to weak contentBest approachUseful, original, people-first contentRelevant, legitimate, editorially earned links The important point is that these are not substitutes for one another. What Does Good Content Actually Do for SEO? Good content gives search engines something useful to understand, index, and potentially surface for relevant searches. More importantly, it gives the visitor a reason to stay on the page and trust your website. Google's guidance asks creators to focus on content that is helpful, reliable, original, comprehensive where appropriate, and created primarily for people rather than search engines. It also specifically encourages demonstrating first-hand expertise. For example, on Simply Sansu, I can write an article or an ebook about website speed optimization based on the work I actually carried out on my own website. That gives me an opportunity to explain: what problems I encountered what I changed why I changed it which optimization techniques I tested what I learned That is much stronger than simply rewriting a generic article titled “10 Ways to Improve Website Speed.” What Do Backlinks Actually Do? A backlink is a link from another website to your website. For example, if a marketing publication references my Simply Sansu article about AI SEO and links to it as a supporting resource, that creates a backlink. Backlinks can serve several purposes: help search engines discover pages provide referral traffic connect related websites provide external signals about relevance potentially strengthen a page's ability to compete in search Google's documentation says its link systems help determine what pages are about and which pages may be helpful for a query. PageRank is also still listed as part of Google's core ranking systems. But there is an important distinction: Not every backlink has equal value. A relevant editorial link from a website covering your industry is very different from hundreds of automatically generated or unrelated links. Content vs. Backlinks: Side-by-Side Comparison If you are deciding where to invest your SEO resources, this comparison can help: FactorContentBacklinksSearch intentDirectly addresses itUsually indirectUser valueHigh when genuinely usefulDepends on referral contextRelevanceBuilt into the pageDepends on linking contextExpertiseCan demonstrate first-hand knowledgeCan provide external validation/contextAuthorityBuilds topical depthCan contribute external authority signalsTrafficCan generate organic trafficCan generate referral trafficConversion potentialDirectDirect or indirectLong-term valueStrong if content remains usefulStrong if links remain relevant and legitimateControlHighLow to moderateMain riskThin, generic, search-first contentManipulative or low-quality link building This is why I would not ask “Should I spend my time creating content or building links?” I would ask: “Which part of my SEO foundation is currently weaker?” Example: Two Websites With Different SEO Problems Let's make the comparison practical. Imagine two websites targeting the same topic. Website A: Good Content, Few Backlinks The site has: detailed articles original research first-hand experience strong search intent alignment good internal linking useful resources But very few external websites reference it. Website B: Many Backlinks, Weak Content The site has: hundreds of backlinks weak articles generic information poor search intent alignment little original insight pages created mainly to target keywords Which one automatically wins? Neither can be declared the winner simply from those two characteristics. Google uses many signals and evaluates pages individually, rather than applying a simple “content score versus backlink score.” This is exactly why SEO cannot be reduced to a single ranking factor. A Practical Comparison Example Consider two hypothetical pages targeting the same topic: MetricPage APage BContent depthDetailedBasicFirst-hand experienceYesNoSearch intent matchStrongModerateInternal linksRelevantLimitedReferring domains340Link relevanceHighMixedOriginal informationYesLimitedUser usefulnessHighModerateLink-building approachOrganic/editorialAggressiveOverall SEO approachContent-ledLink-led Page B has more referring domains. That does not automatically mean it has the stronger SEO foundation. Page A may have fewer backlinks but stronger content, clearer intent, and more original information. At the same time, Page A may eventually benefit from earning more relevant backlinks as other websites discover and reference its content. This is the relationship I think is most important: Good content can create reasons to earn backlinks. What Happens When You Have Great Content but Few Backlinks? This is particularly relevant to smaller websites. You can publish an excellent article and still struggle to compete for a highly competitive query. Why? Because you are not competing only on whether your article is useful. You are competing against other pages that may have: established topical authority strong internal linking brand recognition relevant backlinks years of accumulated authority stronger overall site signals For example, imagine I publish an extremely detailed article on “technical SEO.” The article may be genuinely useful. But I would still be competing with established SEO websites that have been publishing and earning links around technical SEO for years. That does not mean the article is not worth creating. It means content quality is one part of the competitive equation. What Happens When You Have Backlinks but Poor Content? The opposite problem is equally important. Suppose a website acquires 100 backlinks to an article that barely answers the searcher's question. The backlinks do not magically transform the article into a useful resource. Google's systems are designed to prioritize helpful, reliable information, and Google's spam policies specifically identify links created primarily to manipulate rankings as link spam. For example, acquiring links to a thin page about “AI SEO” will not make the page genuinely useful if it contains little original information and does not satisfy the searcher's intent. This is why I would never recommend treating link building as a replacement for content quality. Why Content Should Usually Come First If you are starting a new page, I would normally begin with the content. Ask: What does the searcher need? Then: Can I create something genuinely useful enough to deserve visibility? For example, before building links to a Simply Sansu article about technical SEO, I would first make sure the article actually covers the problem thoroughly and reflects my experience. There is little point promoting a page that needs substantial improvement. Build something worth referencing before trying to get people to reference it. But Content Alone Is Not Always Enough This is where the “content is king” argument falls short. Suppose you have two equally useful articles covering a competitive topic. One website has thousands of relevant references and a well-established presence in the industry. The other has almost no external recognition. The second site may need more than good writing to compete. That is where digital PR and link building can become useful. For example, my own approach to digital PR and link building is not simply about collecting backlinks. The goal is to create opportunities for useful content, expertise, data, commentary, or original insights to earn relevant coverage and links. Content Can Actually Help You Build Backlinks This is where the two strategies become connected. People are more likely to reference content that gives them something useful to cite. That could be: original research statistics expert commentary practical guides case studies original data useful tools detailed resources first-hand experience For example, if I publish an original analysis of SEO trends based on data collected through a Simply Sansu survey, that content could become a resource that journalists, marketers, and other websites reference. In that situation: Content creates the asset. Digital PR creates the exposure. Backlinks can become one outcome. That is a much more sustainable way to think about link building. Content vs. Backlinks for Different SEO Goals The right emphasis can also depend on your immediate objective. What About Internal Links? There is another type of link that should not be overlooked. Internal links. These are links between pages on your own website. For example, on Simply Sansu, an article about keyword research could link to: SEO Fundamentals Technical SEO AI SEO Link Building Digital PR Website Speed Optimization Google says internal links can help users and Google understand a site's structure and discover other pages. It also recommends descriptive, relevant anchor text. So when discussing backlinks, I would not forget the site's internal linking architecture. A page with strong content and a logical internal link structure can be much easier for both users and search engines to navigate. Quality Matters More Than Quantity This applies to both sides of the comparison. More content is not automatically better. More backlinks are not automatically better. Google specifically warns against creating large amounts of content primarily to attract search traffic, and its spam policies identify manipulative link-building practices as problematic. For example: 100 generic AI-generated articles are not necessarily better than 20 genuinely useful articles. And: 500 irrelevant backlinks are not automatically better than a smaller number of relevant, legitimate editorial links. The same principle applies to SEO strategy generally: Quality, relevance, and purpose matter. So, Does Content Matter More Than Backlinks in 2026? I would not answer with a simple yes or no. Content and backlinks do different jobs. Good content is necessary because your page needs to satisfy the searcher's need. Backlinks can matter because external links remain part of Google's link-analysis systems and can help search engines discover pages and understand relationships between them. But neither should be treated as an isolated ranking formula. Google's current Search guidance emphasizes helpful, reliable, people-first content, while its ranking-systems documentation describes a broader collection of systems and signals. So my approach in 2026 is: Create content worth finding. Make it technically accessible and easy to understand. Build internal connections between relevant pages. Promote genuinely useful resources. Earn relevant mentions and backlinks where appropriate. That is a much stronger strategy than choosing content or backlinks as if one makes the other unnecessary. My Take From Working With SEO and Digital PR This is where my experience in both SEO and digital PR influences how I approach the question. I have worked on both sides of the equation. I have created and optimized content around SEO, technical SEO, AI SEO, website performance, and digital marketing. I have also worked on outreach, digital PR, and link-building campaigns designed to earn relevant coverage and backlinks. That experience has made one thing particularly clear to me: A backlink cannot fix content that does not deserve to be referenced. And: Great content can remain under-discovered if nobody finds it, references it, or talks about it. For example, a detailed Simply Sansu article can provide the expertise and information. Digital PR outreach can then put that expertise in front of journalists, publishers, and relevant websites that may find it useful. That is why I see content and backlinks as two connected parts of an SEO strategy rather than two competing strategies. Content vs. Backlinks: The Bottom Line If you are trying to decide where to spend your next SEO hour, start by identifying the problem. If the problem is: “My page does not answer the query well.” Work on the content. If the problem is: “My content is strong, but I have very little external visibility or authority.” Explore legitimate digital PR and link-building opportunities. If the problem is: “My site has good pages, but they are poorly connected.” Work on internal linking and site architecture. If the problem is: “I am creating content and acquiring links, but neither is producing useful results.” Step back and reassess your search intent, audience, technical SEO, content quality, and overall strategy. The best SEO strategy in 2026 is not content versus backlinks. It is: Create something genuinely useful, make it discoverable, build its authority, and give it a reason to be referenced. That is where content and backlinks work best together. Keyword Research Template Keyword research becomes much more useful when you evaluate keywords beyond search volume. The following template can help you compare keyword types, search intent, relevance, business value, and priority before deciding what to target. Blank Keyword Research Template This downloadable template includes a completed keyword research example, a blank template you can use for your own research, and a step-by-step guide explaining how to use each section. Simply_Sansu_Keyword_Research_TemplateDownload The important point is that search volume should be one factor in your decision, not the decision itself. A highly relevant, lower-volume keyword can sometimes be more useful than a broad keyword with thousands of searches but weak relevance to your business For example, “link building services” may have more competition than a highly specific informational keyword, but it has strong commercial relevance for a digital marketing business. On the other hand, “what is AI SEO” can attract people earlier in the research journey and create an opportunity to introduce them to related services.
