Google recently released an official guide on generative AI features on Google Search. It explains how websites can optimize for AI-powered search experiences like AI Overviews and AI Mode. And honestly, the biggest takeaway is simple, good SEO still matters.

There’s been a lot of noise online about AEO, GEO, AI hacks, llms.txt files, chunking content, and rewriting blogs purely for AI tools. But Google clearly says most of those shortcuts are unnecessary. What really matters is creating useful, original, people-first content.

One thing I found interesting is how strongly Google emphasized “non-commodity content.” In simple words, generic content that everyone else is already publishing will struggle. AI search systems are looking for unique perspectives, real experiences, opinions, case studies, and first-hand insights. So instead of publishing another “10 SEO Tips” article, Google prefers content with actual experience and depth.

The guide also mentions that AI search still depends heavily on traditional SEO foundations:

  • crawlable pages
  • good website structure
  • fast loading
  • mobile-friendly design
  • clear headings
  • strong technical SEO

So despite all the AI hype, SEO is definitely not dead. In fact, AI search still relies on Google Search indexing systems to understand and surface content.

Google also warned creators not to mass-produce AI-generated pages just to rank. Using AI tools for research or assistance is fine, but low-value automated content can violate spam policies.

Another important point is that websites do not need special AI markup or files like “llms.txt” to appear in AI search results. Structured data still helps for rich results, but there’s no secret AI-specific code required.

Personally, I think this update is actually refreshing. Instead of chasing AI tricks, website owners should focus more on authenticity, real expertise, storytelling, user experience, and content people genuinely enjoy reading. That has always been the long-term strategy anyway.

As AI search continues evolving, websites with original voices and trustworthy content will probably stand out more than websites pumping out generic AI-written articles every day.
