One of the most useful lessons I learnt while building AI Digital PR Assistant is that a database is not automatically useful just because it stores information.

A database becomes useful when it helps you find the right information quickly.

That became clear when working on the journalist database.

In the early version, journalists could be added with their name, publication, email, and notes. That was a good starting point. But as the product started becoming more campaign-focused, I realized that a flat list of journalists would not be enough.

Digital PR depends on relevance.

You do not send every campaign to every journalist.

You need to choose the right people.

The Problem With One Big Contact List

At first, having one list of journalists looked simple.

But the moment you start thinking about real campaigns, the problem appears.

A beauty campaign should not be mixed with real estate journalists. A fitness story should not be sent to marketing contacts unless it is relevant. A lifestyle writer may be useful for one campaign but not another.

If every journalist sits in one long list, selection becomes slow and messy.

The user has to search, remember, compare, and decide manually.

That may work with five contacts. It will not work well with fifty or five hundred.

So the next logical upgrade was genre-based organization.

Adding Genre to the Journalist Database

The upgrade added a genre field to the journalist database.

Instead of only storing a journalist’s name and publication, the app can now also store the category they belong to.

For example:

Real Estate

Beauty

Lifestyle

Fitness

Marketing

Other

This makes the database more practical.

Now journalists are not just contacts. They are grouped by relevance.

That small change makes campaign planning much easier.

Why Checkbox Tables Made Sense

The next improvement was changing journalist selection inside campaigns.

Instead of selecting journalists from card-style blocks, the campaign screen can show journalists in table format with checkboxes.

This feels more natural for media list building.

Tables are easy to scan. Checkboxes are easy to select. Genres make the list easier to understand.

When creating or editing a campaign, the user can look at the Real Estate table, Beauty table, Lifestyle table, Fitness table, Marketing table, and Other table separately.

That reduces confusion.

It also makes the product feel more professional.

Why This Matters for Digital PR

Digital PR is not just about sending emails.

It is about sending the right message to the right people.

That means relevance is everything.

If a product helps users organize contacts by genre, it helps them think more strategically about outreach.

The app becomes more than a storage tool. It becomes a planning tool.

This is an important difference.

The Next Natural Upgrade

After adding fixed genres, the next question became obvious:

What if the user wants to add their own genres?

That is a very real need.

Different users may work with different industries. Someone may need travel, food, finance, education, parenting, startups, technology, or healthcare.

So the next planned upgrade is custom genres.

Instead of limiting users to a fixed list, the app should allow them to create their own categories.

That would make the journalist database more flexible and more useful for different types of users.

Final Thoughts

This upgrade taught me that small structural changes can make a product much better.

Adding genre may sound simple, but it changes how the user thinks about outreach.

It turns a plain contact list into an organized media database.

For a Digital PR SaaS product, that is a meaningful step forward.

The more organized the media list becomes, the easier it is to create focused campaigns.

And focused campaigns are much more valuable than random outreach.
