Now, lots of travelers use AI to get started. ChatGPT, Google AI overview, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity are answering inquiries such as “best area to stay in Cozumel?” or “is Cozumel safe for retirees?” for many before they even visit their websites. As a small business owner who relies heavily on organic traffic, I’m taking notice. Ranking isn’t the only game anymore For years, SEO was primarily about rankings. Rank #1. That still counts. However, another game is now being played. Not just about ranking, but also about citing, referencing & getting trusted by AI systems. Over the past few years, I’ve observed that articles doing well within AI search seem to have some common traits. Detailed. Specific. Most importantly, written by someone with actual experience. An article about scuba diving in Cozumel – generic style may struggle. An article written by someone who has lived on an island, spoken w/ divers, and assisted thousands of guests w/ planning dive vacations will have much greater success. Experience has become a competitive advantage. Why first-hand knowledge matters more than ever We all know e-e-a-t (experience, expertise, authoritativeness & trust) from Google. In 2026, those principles feel more important than ever. AI systems are extremely good at identifying content that sounds generalized. Many times we see this. Articles that sound like they were assembled using dozens of other articles w/o adding any new information. When writing about Cozumel, I can describe the sound of cruise ships arriving in the morning hours, seasonal patterns of sargassum, and how first-time visitors react when seeing the turquoise water of the Caribbean. These details matter because they’re real. They’re difficult for competitors to copy. Topical authority > random publishing One thing we’ve learned at Stingray Villa is that publishing dozens of unrelated articles doesn’t create authority. However, publishing deeply on a specific topic does. Content focuses on topics such as Cozumel travel, scuba diving, local culture, transportation, weather, restaurants & vacation planning. Over time, this creates a body of knowledge that search engines & ai systems can understand. To put it simply. Would you trust a person who writes about retirement every week vs. A person who occasionally mentions retirement between gardening & car repair articles? The same principle applies online. Beyond traffic One interesting shift is that traditional traffic metrics don’t tell the full picture anymore. Travelers may find your company through an answer provided via AI tool(s); visit your website later; watch your video via YouTube; join your email list; book a trip months down the road. Customer journey is becoming harder to track. That’s why I am focusing more on branded searches, direct bookings, email sign-ups & guest conversations. Increasingly, guests inform us that they found information regarding our company via an AI tool before eventually landing on our website. This means valuable visibility even though it won’t show up in the analytics report as it did before. Experts will own the future I believe AI won’t replace great content creators. I think AI will reward those bringing genuine expertise to the table. The future of SEO is creating better content. Not just more content. Not just any kind of content. Helpful content. Human content. For business owners, marketers & publishers, that is actually good news. People who bring their real experience, real stories, and real expertise finally have something that AI cannot easily replicate. And in a world where generated content abounds, authenticity could be the next greatest ranking factor.
